MS Astoria’s Goodbye 2025: Capturing Her Final Journey

2025 - MS Astoria last journey, the ship that outlasted many others.

Being towed by 2 tugs she left to her final destination at the scrapyard. 

After an overnight, Astoria made a spectacular entrance as she sailed along side the boulevard at Vlissingen. 

In  the afternoon she passed the lock at Terneuzen, it was a nice closeup moment with a lot of spectators.

 Astoria has arrived at the yard at Ghent, where she will be dismantled.

Over 20 years ago on a bright summer day in Amsterdam I had filmed MS Athena, last known as MS Astoria. I’d almost forgotten about it until I stumbled across the files on one of my hard drives.

Back then, digital video cameras were pricey, and while some phones had cameras, they couldn’t record video. One day, in a quirky little computer shop, I found a USB stick with a built-in webcam. It only recorded at 320x240 pixels, but it was portable and perfect for capturing moments on the go—kind of like how we use phones today.

Using modern digital enhancement tools, I’ve upscaled the footage. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a big improvement over the pixelated original. More than that, it’s a nostalgic memory of a charming little ship.
